Serena Devereux

Bio: Serena Devereux is an inter-disciplinary visual artist based between Kildare and  Dublin. She graduated from Fine Art Media at NCAD in 2024 with first class honours. Devereux’s work is rooted in extensive research surrounding phenomenology and the way in which contemporary ontologies have shifted in the wake of the current technological evolution, specifically focusing on the navigation of networked spaces and the perception of synthetic phenomena in digitally altered realities. Serena is currently developing upon this research inquiry, examining these concepts within the context of cybernetics and posthumanism, exploring the fluidity and interconnectedness between human and non-human systems with their surrounding environments.

In 2026 Devereux has been awarded the VECTOR Digital Arts Award, a Bursary Award from Kildare County Council and is participating in this years SPACE Programme. Serena is currently completing an M.Phil In Digital Arts and Intermedia Practices at Trinity College Dublin.

Artwork Description and Title of Work: Cybernetic Ecologies

Cybernetic Ecologies is a data driven, hybrid installation, utilising real-time local weather data, feedback loops and interactive technologies in order to recontextualise posthumanist ideologies through a cybernetic lens within the digital era. Primarily this line of inquiry is concerned with embodiment and the hybridisation or dissolution of otherness dividing the digital, the self and the environment, by means of understanding surfaces, specifically our landscapes, as informational patterns and positioning the skin as a membrane where data resides.

In a rigorous exploration of rhizomatic networks, this work explores the fluidity and interconnectedness existing between human and non-human systems, drawing parallels between data infrastructures and invasive plant species; contextualising the relationship between them and their surrounding environments as a cybernetic system in itself.

Developing upon this speculative approach in reconciling cybernetics and posthumanism, Cybernetic Ecologies examines the landscape as a prosthesis of memory, extending both human and machine consciousness to become embedded within the natural environment, facilitating the emergence of one larger ecosystem, a networked reality produced by ubiquitous data flows.
