Gnomon 1 by Cliona Harmey
Light data received from the sun, triggered the research toward Gnomon V1.
The fragile miniature camera at the heart of this work is predominantly in a deep sleep mode. It has been programmed to use minimal power and wakes once a day to take and transmit an image. Light in this instance, is considered as both data and energy , with periodic capture seen as an antidote to seamless and always on technology. Imagery is accompanied by a description of the sun using data about its spectral classification. This work foregrounds a slow approach to technology by using an intermittent low power networked camera to record solar traces.
The SEED project is funded by a Research Ireland COALESCE Strand 2A grant. It is led by Dr. Trish Morgan from DCU’s School of Communications as Principal Investigator, along with Dr. Shirley Coyle from DCU’s School of Electronic Engineering as co-PI.
